I'm done with the site.
Somehow I've been made into an antagonist - I've been accused of harassing users, baiting people into debates, and being an unsavoury character in general. I haven't been able to get a straight answer as to what I did to recieve these bans, and at this point it doesn't matter any more. Truthfully, I don't think many people on the site hate me.
I criticize people when they post art. Of course I do - That's what I would want other people to do to my art. Getting honest feedback is difficult, and I want to improve. Maybe I'm projecting that onto others too much, but ultimately it's for the best.
Here's a quote from George Moromisato that I think describes my feelings on this very well.
When I see a kid's drawing or a newbie rendering of a Star Destroyer, I don't bother criticizing. There is nothing there that merits my time.
But when I see a skillfull and creative piece like most of your work, I want it to be as close to perfect as possible. I see the potential in the piece and I want it to be better. The piece evokes something in me and suddenly I feel invested in it. I want to spend my time to make it better.
The best creations come from a collaboration between the artist and the critics. Obviously, without artists, there would be no creations. But without critics, art would be solipsistic and irrelevant--a creation that speaks only to the creator and leaves all others untouched.
Ultimately, I don't think the atmosphere being forced is here healthy for creativity. If Newgrounds wants to attract artists and content creators, then they're going about it the wrong way. I know that I wouldn't be in the same position artistically if it wasn't for this site, and I want others to experience the same. Obviously I care about this site - I've been here for the better part of a decade. But, it isn't Newgrounds anymore. It's something different now. As much as I don't want to leave, this site just isn't the kind of place that's going to be good for me anymore; the most regular users are banned, maybe even being targeted, for seemingly arbitrary reasons (culling the users most likely to be recurring supporters doesn't seem like a good business model, either), and obviously a site that punishes loyalty and antagonizes having fun isn't going to appeal to a wide audience
For everyone who I've interacted with on here, be it positively or negatively, thank you for being a part of Newgrounds.
